Drizzy Drake: Up and Coming to Boss and Running
I just can't help it, ever since I heard Drake on Trey Songz' Replacement Girl, I've been hooked. The group So Real Cru from ABDC only furthered my opinion on Drake, with them heavily featuring his tracks for their choreo and killing it every time. Lemme know if you wanna see some of their vids, or look it up yourself like a responsible adult.
Anyway, I'm hooked on the new shit he's on. I just can't stop listening.

Focus: 9th Wonder (some Hip Hop for the Soul)
Some good ass hip hop beats for the soul. 9th Wonder is a producer aka beat maker and is a steady stream of ill tracks that soothe the soul. Doper than a Colombian drug cartel, his thick beats make even me want to spit some lines off the dome. But obviously, I can't so, oh well.

Hip Hop: Big Sean feat. Chiddy Bang, Kid CuDi feat. Kanye, NERD
These two hip hop tracks have been running in my head. Well, more like the Kid CuDi piece was last month, and the Big Sean piece is right now. In any case, they are both awesome tracks, and are another piece in my argument that hip hop is alive and well.

N*E*R*D* has been one of my favorite production hip hop groups for a long time. They aren't afraid to push the limits and be playful with what they do. Sophisticated beats, with a youthful creativity lightly sprinkled with suave is how I might describe their music. Pharrell in a recent interview mentioned that he wanted to make tracks that would make producers they respect, like Kanye and Rizza, want to splice. Big up.

The sophistication and the depth of hip hop, in my opinion, has increased by leaps and bounds. Whether through sampling or witty subtlety, hip hop has progressed since its birth. I especially think that the recent school of hiphop heads, the college kids, are the most apt at presenting this. So without further ado, I present to you:

It's That BritSh*t featuring The Streets (pt. 1)
Led by lead man Mike Skinner and supported by various instrumentalists/vocalists during lives, this unit/man is versatile and tackles a variety subject material using contrasting musical styles that somehow is still held true by Skinner's words. If hip hop died, then it came back in the form of the Streets. Honestly, he is one of my favorite artists ever. From his style, instrumentals, and words, its hard to compare others, and in fact, its useless to make comparisons. Mike Skinner is the Streets is Mike Skinner is.

Jazz house trip hop. It's hard to categorize the Streets. But one thing that is certain is the mean piano loop, hypnotizing vocals, and Skinner's haunting, yet soothing lyrics.

Rewind: A Little Bit of Hip Hop
Oh those good ol' days when hip hop was alive, blah blah blah.
While I think that statements like this miss the mark, I can't deny the awesomeness of classic hip hop tracks. There are just tons of songs that are just simply undeniably *good*.
In order to keep up with the summer theme I've got going, and because I love summer-time songs, I'll be digging up some that fit into such categories!

Off Nas' 2001 album "Stillmatic", this track definitely very underrated, under recognized, under ... well under something. Some of you will think "Tracy Chapman" at the beginning of this song. Others of you will think "Nice and Smooth". In essence, you're both correct. A truly amazing song that deals with real life problems such as AIDS, poverty, and drugs. And sometimes I feel like there Ain't a Damned Thing Changed since 1991.

New Era Hip Hop Lyricists
Hip hop. Is it dead?
There are a lot of ways of tackling this question...
Indeed, the prominence of catchy mainstream rap in the current day is impossible to deny. Some people point to how its all about sex, drugs, alcohol, and violence.
But wasn't this always a part of this scene? Without a doubt, there have always been more socially and politically conscious lyricists, but were they ever the mainstream? Probably not.
But, I don't mean to say that hip hop is through and through great, or even that mainstream hip hop is great stuff. I mean, I totally don't like 50 cent, but luckily for me, he's become more or less irrelevant.
Then, I ask, what of the new school kids? Cool flow, chill beats, kick-ass style, smooth lyrics, not-so-ghetto backgrounds, etc.
Lupe, B.o.B., Wale, Mike Posner, Wiz Khalifa, Travie McCoy, Asher Roth, Drake, among others.
I'm all for it.
Let's face it, these cats are ill.
Hip hop aint dead, its just been upgraded to Hip Hop 2.0 with fresh faces.
