Finally, finally, after many years of waiting for it to happen, electro is no longer a sidenote in pop music. (Specifically, pop music in America.) Everywhere else in the world, first and foremost in Europe, "techno" has long been a mainstream culture. Sure there are deviants in the rave culture and so on, but people took in seriously. This is not a trend that you could see in America, even just a couple years ago. "What is this repetitive bullsh*t?" or "ntz ntz ntz" were (and still are) common responses to techno in the US. But all of you can go suck on your thumbs; Electro is here to stay. With groups like 3Oh!3, LMFAO, Far East Movement, along with the recent trend of electro-base productions in the r&b arena, has come the electronification (yes, I know its not a real word) of even the most pop of pop. I present to you my case:

Rihanna - the most recent princess of pop has recently released several songs in this vein of genre. She teamed up with electro-super-producer, David Guetta, to release some tastefully addictive songs that make you want to swing your hair while you sweat out the stress from your daily grind. Three songs in particular catch my attention:

- as a small comment, I still just am unable to see why people think she is so hot. I mean, sure, she has a bangin' body, but so do a lot of people....? Please enlighten me on this one.

Even J.lo, who I guess is trying to make a comeback to relevance?, takes a shot at the electronica scene in her recent single, On the Floor, which features Pitbull for a Latin double combo. Honestly, its a good beat, and a great attempt, but somehow to me it sounds like an uninteresting version of Stereo love...

Then we have Britney Spears, the queen of pop (I understand Madonna is supposed to be the queen, but its been a while since she's released stuff that's been immensely popular) who takes her stab at this whole electro scene. Those of you who keep up with my blog will notice that I'm using the same song as the last post, but suck it. I'm making a point, damn it. Not only does she attempt this genre, but she takes it a step further by taking a production with some dubstep tones in it. Well, let's say, her producers took half a step, since the wobwobwob in the song, does feel a little half hearted... But regardless, a huge step in dubstep becoming more than just an underground movement for potheads and people who just love love love subwoofers. Hell, but who am I kidding: I would 100% rage to this song.

Trip Hop. Have you heard of it? If you haven't, you've most likely heard it, but just didn't know what it was, or even realized you were listening to it. If you've ever watched any sorta trippy movie, I bet there was some trip hop in the background. In short, trip hop is trippy music, but with a heavy hip hop sort of beat. Obviously, it gets deeper than that, but this music is too trippy, I forgot what I was saying.

Summer Sonic Pick-Ups: Part 2

After Passion Pit, we went back to the beach stage to catch Tahiti80, a French band that I've been listening to for quite some time. Heartbeat was one of the first songs I remember listening to in elementary school; InterFM was bumping this track a lot and I loved it.Wallpaper for the Soul is a soothing track; its great for an afternoon nap. Changes is a more upbeat song by Tahiti80 from their 2006 album, Fosbury. They were absolutely a quality performance, and their smooth instrumentals melted and molded perfectly with the setting sun.

Next up? A bit of Jay-Z. We just watched from the stands up high, but it was clear that it was amazing down in the front section. But I had Calvin Harris to go to, and Doug had the Smashing Pumpkins. Here's a clip I've been meaning to post for a while, but never got around to:

I just had to go to Calvin Harris, and he did not disappoint. He played an hour long set, and it had me dancing my little ass off to his beats. Destroyed my legs doing so, but it was well worth it. Try out "Stars Come Out" off his 2009 album, Ready for the Weekend. It's got a really upbeat vibe, perfect for an adventurous summer night. He built up the set and had everyone dancing, especially when he dropped this beat: You Used to Hold Me. When that bassline dropped, everyone went nuts. Fantastic. One notable thing about Calvin Harris is that his remixes are GRAND as well. Check out his remix of Katy Perry's Waking up in Vegas.

Summer Sonic Pick-Ups: Part 1

So I finally went to Summer Sonic, which is one of the premier music festivals in Japan (others include Fuji Rock). I made it to the Saturday of "SamaSoni" and arrived around 11:15am in time to catch 3OH!3. 3OH!3 did not disappoint, and I was screaming along to every song near the front, where a mini-mosh pit had sprung into action. The highlight of the show was probably "Double Vision" where they got the whole crowd singing along the "HEY! na na na" part. Needless to say I had a blast.

Next, we headed to the beach stage to chill out in the constant ocean breeze and listened to Fireball, a Japanese reggae/dancehall group. It was awesome to watch them perform and the crowd was very into it. This was the first song I heard by FiyahB~ back in 2005, and was immediately taken in. Doesn't it make you want to get up and start dancing too? Speaking of getting up and dancing, here is "Dancing Mood" by Fireball. Beautiful.

Saw K-OS, a hybrid rap/rock group from Canada. Was good. But didn't blow me away either. Oh well. Followed this up with UFFIE! She performed "Pop the Glock" first, and it was awesome! But she seemed kinda tired and the crowd was meh, sooooo...

I headed over to PASSION PIT! Never would have thought they would be so powerful in concert. Since I expect most of you to have knowledge of Passion Pit, I'm going to post up remixed versions or other uses of their songs! Woot. Pacman (Phillip Chbeeb: Marvelous Motion), Andrew Baterina (SoReal), and Sifu got together to choreograph this piece to Sleepyhead. This one is the song I've probably listened to most by Passion Pit. Indeed, the prominence of catchy mainstream rap in the current day is impossible to deny. Some people point to how its all about sex, drugs, alcohol, and violence.

But wasn't this always a part of this scene? Without a doubt, there have always been more socially and politically conscious lyricists, but were they ever the mainstream? Probably not.

Everyone's heard the term "techno", perhaps even "trance", or "electro", "house", etc. But do you know which is which? Perhaps? Well, in case you wanted know the difference, here is a several part series of undetermined length to try to help explain this to you.

First off, techno is commonly used to describe the larger umbrella of sub-genre within the realm known as "electronic dance music" aka EDM. Electronic music was pioneered in the 70's by several groups, with Kraftwerk from Germany being one of the main groups to emerge from this early era of "electro".

Here is their classic, The Robots.

Yet, the term "techno" was not coined until a little while later in Detroit. A youth movement that centered around DJs and parties was vibrant in Detroit in the mid to late 80's. It was in this culture that classic "popping" soundtracks were born, such as Cybotron's "Clear".

Sound familar? Maybe? In any case, you should recognize the part that's been sampled in more recent mainstream songs, such as Missy Elliott's Lose Control

Something that people may not know about techno is that it was influenced by not just electro-pop groups such as Kraftwerk, but also had strong soul, disco, and funk influences. In fact, many in the predominant crowds that incubated techno were not Caucasian, which is somewhat of a reversal in at least the image of the demographic of techno today.

Candy-techno-house-hip-hop, this seems to be the trend for some time, much to my delight. I remember telling a friend around 2000 that the future holds a melding of big techno/house beats molded with hip-hop and r&b elements, so I was decidedly pleased the rise of artists such as LMFAO. Anyway, without further ado, some songs that are sure to get stuck in your head.
